Do you ever substitute anything for the flaxseed meal in the oatmeal energy balls? That’s not an ingredient I usually keep in my kitchen, so just wondering if you have tried other options. Love your newsletter!
I haven't tried it with a substitute for the flax yet Jen but I know the ones I buy at my co-op don't have flax in them at all. I'm sure you could find a similar recipe on Pinterest that didn't have flax! If you do and you find one you love please share!
I love reading about your mornings! I’m from a family of early risers as well. I like waking up early and having time to be dreamy and mindless before I have to go anywhere. I have fond memories of working at a breakfast restaurant in Chico, biking to work at 5:30 am, sometimes alongside the moon.
My husband and his family are all night owls, and our daughter inherited his late night tendencies.
Serra, I appreciate your comment here so very much as I try to imagine riding a bike at 5:30 in the morning alongside the moon. You know exactly what I'm talking about! I swear there is magic in the air that time of day! Were the morning people, the first ones in the breakfast restaurant, the best? I always loved opening up when I worked at Whole Foods. The first hour of the day were always my favorite people.
Yes, there’s an intimacy to interacting with other people so soon after waking up, like we’re still our animal selves, before rationality kicks in. I did like the first hour customers best.
Definitely a morning person as I usually wake early hours and listen to the radio for an hour or so before venturing downstairs for the all important first cup of tea of the day. We live in a fairly built up area but there's a small patch of scrub and fields a 5 minute walk away where we walk our dog on a daily basis. I love this 'touch base' and 'grounding' with the seasons. Currently it's the energetic singing of a very vocal Chiffchaff and watching the progression of the emerging Hawthorn blossom. First butterflies of the year starting to establish territories also - Peacock, Orange Tip, Speckled Wood seen to date and it won't be long before they are joined by the damsel and dragonflies.
With a bit of imagination you can imagine yourself somewhere more distant and remote, an idea neatly captured by Tony Hoagland in his poem 'The Power of Traffic' which includes the lines:
"you have to hear the hum of the parkway as surf,
and the honking of horns in the morning
as a great migration of geese"
I love this time of year before it gets too hot (mild temperatures by your standards but too much for a delicate soul like me! 😀). I like the new title and look forward to reading more.
I love I just googled chiffchaff and listened to 1:32 video on YouTube of a beautiful spring chirp. Thank you for sharing here Richard, I always appreciate your insights greatly! I'm curious if you have a specific tea you drink or does it vary each morning?
Having an outdoor ritual like that sounds like an incredible way to greet each day. I'm inspired just by simply hearing about it!
Thanks Elyse - at least you now know why it's called a Chiffchaff and has an easily identifiable song! I'm a bit fussy about my tea and like a strong brew of Yorkshire tea although a decent cup of coffee is my key requirement later in the morning and have recently bought myself a mocha pot which I love. I'm a man of routine!
I love your new title and also love the energy of early morning light emerging, with its gifts of new possibilities and fresh perspectives. I’m coming out of a dormant creative period, too, and happy to find art is always ready to play when I return. Thanks for all you share here!
So happy to get your note here Stephanie, thank you for taking the time. Glad to hear your art was patiently waiting for you.. I've learned that over time that it's always there. Thank you for reading!
Oh yes, I’m a lifelong morning person!
Love that we share that too, Jen!
